5:30-6:00pm Food
6:00-8:30pm Speaker: Jason Kaczor - SharePoint

Abstract:

This presentation is about Custom actions which are .NET components. I will also be presenting some best practice framework code as well for trace logging/etc. I will also talk about Event Receivers – they tie closely to the concept of “something executing based on something else changing” like workflows, but are occasionally the better choice to use.

Speaker 1:

Jason Kaczor is a SharePoint MVP and an independent consultant specializing in SharePoint and .NET technologies; architecture, design, governance, operations, training as well as custom solutions & applications. He has been providing technical solutions to business problems for 20 years; covering nearly all industry sectors.

Formerly a Premier Field Engineer/Rapid Response Engineer for Microsoft Canada, he provided SharePoint and .NET expertise worldwide. While at Microsoft he was involved in several unique initiatives, including; Bad Guy Patrol and the Child Exploitation Tracking System (CETS). He has always been involved in user group and community-based initiatives, most recently a co-founder of the Calgary SharePoint User Group (CalSPUG). Jason has been a featured speaker at Microsoft TechDays 2011 (Toronto, Vancouver, Montreal), 2010 (Vancouver, Edmonton, Calgary) & 2009 (Calgary), Microsoft/DevTeach Improving Developer Productivity with SharePoint 2010 and Visual Studio 2010 (Calgary, Edmonton), SharePoint Summit 2010 (Montreal). Jason is available to speak to user groups across Canada; including Vancouver, Edmonton, Toronto, Montreal and Halifax.

For fun he does the typical “old-school” geeky/nerdy activities and is trying to convince his kids that programming is “cool”.

Hi Wei, thanks for checking. Yes, the room can easily hold 40 people as Edmonton room is the biggest room available for rent at Stanley Milner.

Jason had a great presentation which covers a very broad experience on the SharePoint tools used along with custom actions.

Jason is obviously very familiar with the SharePoint family of products and he did a very good job of talking about how to best approach SharePoint development, through configuration, extensions, and creating new components. I personally thought and hoped there'd be more focus on actual development, but none the less it was still a great presentation. My recommendation if he did this same presentation again in the future would be to actually show the creation of a workflow extension from scratch, albeit a simple one, and then show some of the community ones he downloaded. Watching someone deploy a prebuilt solution is rather mundane.

He didn't seem that well prepared. His demos failed. He didn't explain what he was trying to demo. I had hoped to learn what Sharepoint is all about and left without really understanding what it is and what it might be used for. Perhaps a simple case study might have been enlightening.

SharePoint is a beast, and this presentation showed that, whether the crowd appreciated it or not. Deployment is difficult, the API is ancient with its own pitfalls, and the VS project/solution structure is tricky to wrap your head around. So, if you were frustrated watching the presentation - honestly that's what SharePoint development is like! As for the theory of the presentation, it sounded as though "don't develop custom code" was the focus of the slides, however I think when talking to a developer group, we're looking for that as a one-page "warning" versus a series of slides to talk us out of why we came to the talk. :) Suggestions for improvement to Jason: Less PowerPoint, more code, and less jumping around from demo to demo. Jason was very knowledgeable and that was appreciated. The EDMUG team did a great job of organizing the event - thanks to all of you too!!!

Too long. Demos did not work.

Very informative. I had to leave early but I acquired a lot of knowledge in a short time.

The presentation seemed a bit rough. Just like using codeplex apps in business it's good to make sure they compile beforehand. A few assertations only applied to previous versions of SharePoint, since 2010 was presented that should have been at least noted if not left out. Reiterating to a dev group that coding is not the only solution was good to hear. Sometimes we get stuck in that mindset.
