David Woods
Security In the .Net Framework

Thursday, February 28th 2008, 5:30pm at the Milner Public Library

The .NET framework does a lot of security work for us, it is important to know both how applications get attacked and how to defend yourself. In this talk we will hack a website using common techniques used in the wild today and then will learn how to defend against these attacks using simple techniques and best practices. We will also take the defense up a level by protecting secrets via cryptography to minimize the damage if an attacker were to compromise our systems.

David Woods is an independent contractor based in Edmonton, Alberta. He has worked his way from BASIC (and still has his Apple II to prove it) to .NET and still enjoying programming. Dave currently works on developing enterprise applications.

The nHibernate Mafia
and the
Persistent Ingorant Domain Model

Thursday, August 23rd 2007, 5:30pm at the Milner Public Library

Bil Simser
DDD and Fitnesse
Tuesday, July 31st 2007, 5:30pm at the Milner Public Library

Tom.jpgMany development teams undertake projects by diving straight into writing code, maybe even doing Test Driven Development based off of requirements. For business scenarios, there exists an excellent tool that can help the team both understand the domain and produce testable requirements as the understanding about the domain grows. What does it take to translate business requirements from spec to tests and how can you ensure that the domain is valid and meets the needs of the system?

This session will outline the important of FitNesse and the FIT Library by showing how to drive out foundations of domain-driven design and walk through building out testable requirements that a cross functional team can produce in a short amount of time. We will explore the idenification of domain concepts and how they "fit" in with the testing model through code and web pages.

Bil Simser lives and works in Alberta, Canada, as an independent Solutions Architect Consultant. He specializes in SharePoint, .NET (C#), Agile (Scrum), Test Driven Development, Domain Driven Design, and computer game programming. He has been in software development for over 15 years and has helped build many large-scale mission critical systems along the way. Working at Canadian Pacific Railway for almost 10 years with the development community there, he established best practices, development standards and guidelines, evaluated and recommended new tools and technologies, and helped teams and projects progress into the .NET world.

Bil has been involved with Microsoft's .NET platform since the early betas and has a deep passion for good Architecture and Software Design. He runs several successful open-source projects and helps out with other projects where he can in the .NET, Agile, and SharePoint communities through participation in numerous online forums, newsgroups and mailing lists, and speaking at user groups and public technology conferences, including TechEd, PDC, and DevConnections.

Bil has been a Microsoft SharePoint MVP since 2004 and a member of the MSDN Canada Speakers Bureau. When he's not talking about himself in the third person, Bil is a pretty nifty guy when you get to know him.

The Edmonton .NET User Group, with the generous sponsorship of DevTeach and MSDN Canada, is very happy to be able to present Roy Osherove (www.iserializable.com) in his first North American user group presentation. Roy will be speaking on Agile Development Techniques and Methodologies which he describes here:

Ever knew on your first day on the project that you’re going to miss the deadline? Ever been “surprised” that the customer changed their mind? Ever had long nights trying to fit your latest changes into code that just keeps on breaking? You’re not alone. Wondering where you should start if you want to go Agile? In this talk we'll explore the Whys and hows of Agile development – what does it mean, and what is it trying to solve in our day to day projects? Why do most software projects fail and what are the main differences between Agile and traditional methodologies? We'l also compare two leading methodologies: Scrum and eXtreme programming, and see why it makes the most sense to combine them rather than choose one over the other. We'll also best practices and techniques for writing unit tests and Test Driven Development. Going Agile means also getting technical skills, and this is by far one for the most important of them.
